The floor is one room — the resort is the rest of the night

TAB and Keno sit in the Sports Lounge alongside live sport — useful if your group splits between punters and spectators. The Juicy Rump looks straight at the MacDonnell Ranges from its deck and beer garden; bands play on that deck from 7:00 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Tali handles the sit-down meal side. Tempo, Casbah and Splash Cafe round out the food-and-drink map in the site navigation.

Next door in practice, not in ownership: the Alice Springs Convention Centre — the only purpose-built convention centre in Central Australia, with MacDonnell Ranges views and capacity for 1,200.

Upstairs in status, not geography: the Members Lounge. Fifty-four of the latest electronic games, a private bar, food and drink service, and weekly lounge promotions. Platinum, Diamond and Diamond Plus members get unlimited entry; hotel guests and Crowne Plaza in-house guests can use the lounge too.

Health and leisure facilities and accommodation are part of the same Barrett Drive complex. Lasseters Rewards ties the venues together — points on gaming, redemption at restaurants, bars, accommodation, gift shop, concerts and events.

Fill in the application, show a photo ID at the service desk at the casino entrance, and walk out with a card. Membership is free. Points accrue on electronic games (card in the reader) and at designated table games (hand the card to the croupier). One hundred points equal $1 in redemption value.

Levels are reviewed every six months. You move up or down based on points earned in that window:

• Gold — from 2,000 points
• Platinum — from 10,000 points
• Diamond — from 40,000 points
• Diamond Plus — from 100,000 points

Diamond Springs, then Lasseters — a short timeline

The property opened in 1981 as Diamond Springs Casino. Ford Dynasty announced a sale to Iris Capital in April 2021 after a 24-year ownership stretch. Today the homepage still frames the place the same way locals do: somewhere to dine, stay, celebrate and be entertained — with a casino that happens to stay open past midnight most nights.

Ten things that catch first-time visitors off guard

1. Alice never came. The town carries her name anyway. Charles Todd ran the Overland Telegraph Line that linked Australia to the rest of the world in the 1870s; the spring beside the telegraph station was named for his wife Alice. She stayed in Adelaide. The name stuck before anyone thought to check.
2. The river through town is usually sand. Open a map and the Todd River cuts straight through Alice Springs. Drive in expecting water and you will stare at a dry channel locals use as a footpath, a cricket pitch, a picnic spot.
3. Every direction is a long drive. Roughly 1,500 km to Adelaide. About the same to Darwin. The nearest coast is more than 1,000 km away whichever way you point the car. Flight connections and fuel stops matter here in a way they do not in Sydney or Melbourne.
4. Forty degrees by day, frost at night. Summer on the Juicy Rump deck can feel brutal. Come back in June or July and the same deck needs a jacket after dark — nights drop below zero while afternoons still climb into the low twenties. Sunscreen and a warm layer both belong in the bag.
5. Classrooms without walls. From 1951, Alice Springs School of the Air ran lessons over the radio to kids on cattle stations hundreds of kilometres from the nearest schoolhouse. No video link, no internet — just a schedule, a teacher in town and children at kitchen tables across the interior.
6. The train is named for the men who brought camels.Afghan cameleers hauled freight through the country that broke horses. The Ghan between Adelaide and Darwin keeps a shortened version of "Afghan" in its name.
7. The casino shares a name with gold nobody found. Harold Lasseter swore he had located a reef in the 1930s. Search parties went out. Maps were drawn. The reef was never confirmed. The story hung around long enough that a casino on Barrett Drive ended up wearing the same name — outback myth turned into a street address.
8. Green fairways in red country. Alice Springs Golf Club opened in 1985 — Peter Thomson and Michael Wolveridge laid it out between rock and scrub, MacDonnell Ranges behind the back nine. Kangaroos treat holes 3 through 8 like a paddock. Regulars will tell you the wind always blows from the coast, which is their way of saying the nearest beach is about 1,600 km east. A morning round fits neatly before tables open at 4:00 pm if your group wants something outdoors before the gaming floor.
9. A pedal radio called the doctor. Isolated station families could not ring a hospital. They pumped a Traeger pedal radio by hand to reach the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The RFDS tourist facility on Stuart Terrace still occupies the 1939 base — the planes still fly, the story is not museum-only.
10. The sky is the main event after dark. Step ten minutes past the streetlights on a moonless night and the Milky Way stops being an abstract phrase. Southern Cross, Magellanic Clouds on a clear evening, humidity low enough that stars do not blur.
